What are your hours?
Our front desk is staffed Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Some weekend hours may be available, please call 605-398-9200 to check.
How do I get to The Abbey?
The Abbey is located 1.8 miles off U.S. Highway 12, approximately 12 west of Milbank and 8 miles east of I-29. Driving directions can be found here. (Please note that some GPS devices may direct you inaccurately.)
I would like to schedule a tour, what do I need to do?
Complimentary tours are offered during our regularly scheduled staff hours, M-F 9:00a to 4:00p. Weekend tours need to be scheduled ahead of time and are based upon staff availability. Please call 605-398-9200 to schedule.
Are there any areas of The Abbey that are off limits?
Yes, there are some private areas of The Abbey. These areas within the Abbey are clearly marked. Also note that the Abbey grounds surround a private residence. Please respect our neighbor's privacy by honoring the boundaries that are marked on the outer grounds.
When you come to a fence while hiking at The Abbey, it means you have reached our neighbor's land. Please remain on our trails.
Do I have to be on a retreat to stay at The Abbey?
No. The Abbey is available for overnight stays. Please see our Lodging Page for more details.
How many rooms are available at The Abbey?
The Abbey currently has 67 rooms available that sleep a maximum of 133 people. The room layouts vary, but a few examples are twin beds (1 or 2) with a shared bathroom, two twin beds with a private bathroom, full sized beds with a private bathroom, handicap accessible rooms, and suites that have a sitting area and/or patio. What amenities are included with a room at The Abbey?
The Abbey rooms come with fresh towels, hand soap, alarm clock, and fan. Certain rooms have access to wi-fi and air conditioning. The Abbey encourages Rediscovery of Peace, and therefore do not have televisions in rooms. An iron and ironing board is available for use, and the reception desk has complimentary personal care items should you forget something.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Our standard check-in hours are 3 PM to 5 PM. Our standard check-out time is by 11 AM. However, these hours can be modified to accommodate groups.
Does The Abbey offer internet access?
Only certain areas of The Abbey have WiFi internet access. If your visit requires an internet connection, please advise staff prior to your visit in order to be assigned a room with connection. Cell phone coverage at The Abbey is limited; the east side of the building (toward the Valley) is better for cell service.
Do your room rates include continental breakfast?
Yes, our continental breakfast includes cereal, fruit, granola bars, yogurt and more.
Do you have a restaurant?
The Abbey does not have a restaurant with regular hours; however, it does have a fully staffed kitchen that will prepare meals for groups of 10 or larger, or for a $100 minimum.
What type of meeting rooms does The Abbey offer?
The Abbey offers several sizes of meeting rooms from smaller conference rooms, to medium sized fireplace rooms that will fit up to 40 people. Our auditorium seats up to 175 people with an adjoining room that will fit an additional 50 people. The main church sanctuary will hold 250 people, and the lower chapel can accomodate up to 30.
Are pets welcome at The Abbey?
Pets are not allowed at The Abbey. Please call the front desk for recommendations on area kennels.
Can I have my wedding at The Abbey?
The Abbey does not host weddings, renewals, or receptions.
Does The Abbey host regular worship services?
At this time we only host services during our special events; however, the Church Sanctuary is available for private church functions. Please contact The Abbey for more information.
Is alcohol allowed at The Abbey?
Yes. Alcoholic beverages are allowed as long as people are respectful of The Abbey and South Dakota State Laws.
Is smoking permitted?
Smoking is not allowed inside the Abbey buildings; however, there are designated smoking areas outside.
